Art
The Great Wave: Hokusai was a great artist. He lived to be 90. He was such a prolific artist. His painting The Wood Cutter told a story, as well as many of his other paintings. The painting The Fisherman tells a different story and old Chinese folk tale suggest the two paintings go together. The video relates to the readings due to the fact that it suggests that every painting tells a story through lines, shapes and colors. Watching and learning about different artist and why they do what they do is always interesting to me.
Early Photography: Daguerro was a famous photographer who created the form of photography called daguerreotype. Daguerreotype is a one of a kind, detailed photographic image that is on polished copper, coated with silver. The process is very interesting and entertaining to watch. The video relates to the text due to the fact that it shows you can create masterpieces with natural things, such as copper and silver, that show great dimensions and texture.
Death of Marat: The painting tells a great story. It is entirely mad of oils and is located at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts located in Belgium. This is one of the most famous images of the French Revolution. The artist displays Marat's death as a way to show innocence and compassion. This relates to the text in which it shows that art can express so many thoughts and history without actually saying a single word.
Manet: Manet was a French painter in the 19th century who painted "A Bar at the Folies-Bergere", which is located in London currently. This was Manet’s last major work. It was painted in 1882 and shows a view from the Folies Bergere night club in Paris. This relates to the reading in which it shows great color and dimensions. I personally find this painting showing much talent and very beautiful.
Delacroix: Liberty Leading the People is a painting by Eugène Delacroix commemorating the July Revolution of 1830. The feeling is what really makes this piece Romantic. It was painted to make people think about the frenzy and power that revolution had. This relates to the notes because the figures are in a pyramid shape, which gives a feeling of movement and emotion. The contrasts in the colors also is very emotive. I personally think its amazing how one piece of art can tell such a big story.
Monet: He was one of those artist where he would only work on a certain painting for a couple minutes before the lighting changed too much where he had to stop. The Poplars is a series of paintings by Monet. These were painted in the summer and fall of 1891. The trees were in a marsh along the banks of the Epte River a few kilometers upstream from Monet's home and studio, this is where he got his inspiration from. This relate to the notes due to the fact that he uses lines and shading to create texture. I really enjoyed the light coloring used so the viewer could tell exactly what season it was displaying.
Cassatt: The Child's Bath is an 1893 oil painting by American artist Mary Cassatt. The subject matter and the overhead perspective were inspired by Japanese woodblocks. The Child's Bath is a very loving photo. It shows a mother giving her child a bath just by helping wash the child feet. This related to the text due to the fact that the artist used shading and texture to show depth and perception in bath and the mother’s hand and child’s foot. This piece was truly a heart felt piece.
